The aesthetic for this house is one of moody, coastal chic – an understated nod to life along the coast. Situated on an elevated, sloping site half way between the front and back beaches of Portsea, this house is made up of three lineal building forms that align with the contours and ‘step’ down the site.

We designed the central extrusion as the communal living zone, with connections to front and rear external protected terraces. Depending on the time of the day or direction of the wind, the alfresco terraces can be enjoyed all year round, to seek refuge and shade. External living allows one to enjoy sunsets on the outer bar whilst cooking some local seafood or a crisp home-made pizza.

The pavilion nature of the internal spaces ensures one can always be reminded of their location up or down the slope, by gazing through the pavilion to the other side. These 3 platforms were designed, so that friends and family could come together to enjoy each other’s company in a multitude of ways.
